Congresswoman and Presidential hopeful Michelle Bachmann made a stop at the Romanesque Room at the Historic Green Hotel in Pasadena on Wednesday Oct. 19 as part of her whirlwind tour of California apparently to raise funds and support mainly from the beleaguered Tea Party in California that doesn’t hold one office or any appointed positions in California. Bachmann had radio interviews and speaking engagements all day and will speak at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco today.
Some mixed personal and political observations
First, Michelle Bachmann is a beautiful woman who is 55 but could pass for 35. She has had five children and 23 foster children, has a law degree, did postdoctoral work in taxation, worked for the IRS on tax issues, and is a tough, feisty speaker who doesn’t look only 5 feet 2 inches tall. She does not fit the Larry Wilson stereotype of the Tea Party as uneducated “wing nuts.” As reflected by Michelle Bachmann, the Tea Party is composed of economic rationalists despite all the disparagement in Pasadena media otherwise. Although reporter Frank Girardot of the Star News reported that Mrs. Bachmann reportedly may have passed out before entering the Romanesque Room of the Green Hotel, the report was apparently not meant as disparaging. I saw Mrs. Bachmann in the patio of the Green Hotel doing TV photo ops prior to entering the room. If Mrs. Bachmann had passed out from fatigue it certainly would have been understandable given her grueling schedule. But she charged into the Romanesque Room for a highly energetic speech as if she was a gladiator doing combat in the Roman Coliseum, not the Romanesque Room typically reserved for wedding receptions.
But Mrs. Bachmann was not resolved to be a martyr for her cause and still believes she is in the Presidential race despite her recent drop in the polls. At minimum, Mrs. Bachmann’e endorsement of any other candidate will carry a lot of weight as to whom the Tea Party wants for President. At maximum, Mrs. Bachmann would be a strong President in foreign affairs, in monetary policy, and immigration, all of which were topics she addressed during her talk.
In political primaries a candidate must lean to the extreme base of their party to get nominated and once nominated can then move to the center. Mrs. Bachmann is still in the primary mode of appealing to her base. Mrs. Bachmann could end up as a Vice Presidential candidate or a Presidential cabinet post. I wouldn’t rule her out for President and I would vote for her if she were the nominee.
Bachmann may have cooled off as a presidential contender but she reminded everyone she is the only woman in the race. Mrs. Bachmann pointed out that she was the first woman to ever win the Iowa Straw Poll for President. Her beauty could also be a factor If she was a candidate. And Mrs. Bachmann is beautiful in more than physical attraction but in her charm, wit, spunk, and femininity.
Mrs. Bachmann invaded the declining Roman Empire on Wednesday night. The plundering by the Vandals and the Barbarians of Indy-Mac, Countrywide, and Fannie Mae banks, all headquartered in Pasadena, died when the mortgage market collapsed in 2008. The plundering is still continuing in California with Solyndra and the wave of other green power projects underway in California all funded by the Obama administration.
The Roman Empire in the West (Rome) died but Constantine Christianlized the Eastern Half of the Empire and it survived another 1,000 years. We may be seeing something like that where America’s heartland has shifted to the Tea Party and the Left Coasts have remained “pagan.”
America is facing the prospect of future financial collapse mainly due to overextending entitlement programs. The Mortgage Meltdown resulted in something like twelve times the amount of financial resources disappearing overnight than what it has cost in 8 years of fighting the War on Terror.
No matter what one thinks of Michelle Bachmann or the Tea Party they are the only political movement trying to save the nation from financial ruin and imminent demise. Michelle Bachmann is a 5’ 2” gladiator who is still willing to fight to save the nation from a world facing the prospect of Chinese dominance, a topic she spoke about during her speech in Pasadena. Long live the Republic even if it already is slowly and irreversibly collapsing in California.
I believe that Ms. Bachmann is a much more viable candidate than her current poll numbers would indicate. The nature of the Republican debates has strategically placed her at a disadvantage. With eight candidates, the focus on Romney, Perry, and Cain has diminished her actual face time with the viewing public. Once the field dwindles down, and people get a chance to see what she's all about, I expect a surge. She possesses the rare quality of being extremely tough, and yet charming at the same time. Once Santorum, Huntsman, and Perry throw in the towel (and they will), look out. Like the tortoise, she's in it for the long haul. In my opinion, the real race will ultimately be between Ms. Bachmann and Romney. You heard it here first.
