I'm one of those folks who received a "warning" email from the California Labor Federation warning us to be careful and to call the special hotline if we encounter one of these "offending" signature gatherers. We were also warned that signing these petitions would "take away our right to make a voluntary paycheck deduction to our union's political action fund." As someone who's very politically active, I've become accustomed to receiving emails from both sides of the political aisle warning of ruination, decimation, eradication and other such words of doom and gloom. But this email is beyond the pale. I read the summary of the proposition's language as provided by the secretary of state and I can't see how making a union ask its members to confirm once a year that their members wish to contribute or not to the union's PAC is somehow stripping union members of their right to make a voluntary paycheck deduction. Quite the contrary - this would only confirm that the union is truly reflecting the desires of their membership. Or maybe that's what the union leaders are afraid of?
